Media Log - January 2024 Edition

Instead of trying to accumulate all of my thoughts into one big post at the end the year (I may still do that too), I’ve decided to test out a running summary of the month. Kottke style. It will probably be more comprehensive than the year end bit at the very least.

Captains of the World - 2022 World Cup, mostly through the lens of the team captains. It barely touches on the human rights issues in Qatar and steers completely clear of how the event ended up there in the first place. It is in direct association with FIFA so that makes sense. (B)

Eater: Mise En Place - YouTube series that goes behind the scenes at Michelin star restaurants. They focus on a day in the life, they vary from good to great, but all clock in at 15-20 mins and don’t overstay their welcome. This stuff falls into the category of companion videos to other activities, but still holds up on its own too. (B-)

Tombs: Junji Ito Story Collection - Horror manga is not a medium or genre I’m well versed in, but I like Ito’s work a lot. You probably know him from the spirals, but this collection of short stories is a great introduction. (B)

Alan Wake 2 - Proper spooky video game in pretty package. The graphical fidelity mixed with FMV would be a technical achievement by itself. But then it tells a truly creepy story that constantly bends the lines between reality and nightmare. Gameplay wise it isn’t doing much new, but it felt like an evolution of the story telling and world building Remedy achieved with Control. (A)

Spots - Picked up this light and cool board game for one of the kids for Christmas. We ending up playing it a ton over the break and into the new year. It is a push your luck dice rolling game, with fun art, that is easy to teach, and quick to play. (A+)

Very Important People - Improv comedy show in the vein of a Barbara Walters interview. The guest is in full make up + costume and decides who they are on the spot. The host follows suit and hilarity and chaos ensue. (A)

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown - The first great game of 2024, simple as that. A modern entry into the metroidvania (search action) genre on par with Metroid Dread (2021) and Hollow Knight (2017). If you want more, I talked about it at length on Episode 225 of the SAMCast. (A+)

Dimension 20: Fantasy High - Started this when the third season was announced and have continued to make my way through the first season this month. This is solid entertainment, but also inspired me to kick off a campaign at home with my wife and youngest. More on that later. (B)

NikeCraft General Purpose Shoe - I’ve been eyeballing a second pair of one of my favorite shoes in a new color for a while. It seems like the partnership with Tom Sachs is dead in the ground, so there are no new runs or colors on the horizon. (A)

Tommy Fingers - I dedicated a Friday post to this channel. It is so excellent and I want so much more of it. (A+)

2022 Shoe Review

I finally found level ground for my sneaker, some times obsession, but mostly hobby this year. I have enough pairs now that I know what I like. My chase for specific shoes has become more focused and I know that a few shoes a really love is better than 4 colorways of the same shoe I really like and found below retail.

Vans Gilbert Crockett Blackout (January) - It was a great day in 2019 when I learned they made “pro” Vans that didn’t have paper thin soles. I love the look of a Van, like many generations surely they were the shoes of my youth. Half Cabs specifically were what I skated in for a lot of high school, but as an adult these dogs need support. The pros are built for some youth to trash themselves on a 10 set, but also for an old man to run errands on the weekend. Jump to this past year and I picked up my second pair of Crockett pros in black.

Air Jordan 1 High Bordeaux (April) - Last year we went to Boston for Spring Break with the kids on some 2020 flight credits. We didn’t go with a full itinerary though. If we can we like to have some things we’d like to do, but keep space for organic discovery too. Some times that takes the form of exploring a little museum tucked into the shadows of a city. Other times it is the 12 year old telling us he wants some “drip” for his birthday and us seeking out sneaker stores. No luck in Beantown, but in the airport home we ordered these.

Nike Sacai x Clot Waffle “Net Blaze” (May) - When there was a run of Sacai drops in various colorways on the dumb app in 2021 I got in on all of them, and as expected didn’t win any. Frustrated and dead set on picking up a pair I got the “Kiss of Death 2” Clots in late 2021. Last year still enamored with the look and already sold on the comfort, I picked up a second pair.

Nike Air Max 1 ‘Treeline’ (May) - I’ve been hunting for my first pair of Maxes for a few years now, but could never find the colorway I liked. These were an app drop that I assumed was a limited release. I got in on them not thinking I would win and then I did! Huzzah…oh these are a drop you can just buy and they were just available in the weeks that followed the release? I make out like that upset me, it did, but not because I didn’t like the shoes. They are great, but Nike sucks for how they operate all this.

Nike Dunk Low ‘Fossil Rose’ (August) - Mike’s white whale hunt for Dunks and my continued support to “get in” on drops eventually turned into my desire for Dunks. He gave me the dunk virus and on a wild hair in the summer I finally picked up these. Easily my favorite pair last year.

Nike Air Max 1 ‘Crepe Hemp’ (September) - Now armed with fool me once knowledge on Max “drops”, I was somehow fool me twiced when these came out. The color and textures are super up my alley. They are the shoes I get the most compliments on out in public. Speaking of, I used to not compliment people’s shoes when I was out. Maybe I’d lean over to my wife and say “those are crazy expensive, but really cool”. After feeling great from enough shoe compliments myself I now hand them out like candy.

Nike Dunk Low ‘Teddy Bear’ (December) - These are my favorite pair I bought last year and I don’t get to wear them. My wife’s relationship with my dumb shoe hobby ebbs and flows between mildly supportive to passive aggressive. When she requested that I pick her out “cute fashion shoes” last Fall I jumped on the chance. Really happy with the pick, they look cool as hell on her and they make me smile every time she wears them.

Tom Sachs x Nikecraft General Purpose Shoe (December) - So she gets Christmas shoes and I don’t? Is not what I said to myself, but it certainly was the theme to the justification to pick up a grail shoe at the end of the year. They are great, super comfortable, look good with lots of wear (other peoples pictures), and no fair that Laura Kampf is rocking them in every stinking video. How am I supposed to hold out on getting these!

2022 Holiday Round Up

I did three round ups to close out 2022 and then I went on a two week break from work where I consumed more media per day (probably) than I had in the 351 days that proceeded it. So here is one more round up. It is a lot of catching up on things I wanted to get to, picks from other people’s best of list, or movies we finally got to watch because we were finally all home together for a stretch.

Nope - After showing up five years late to Get Out we decided to throw Nope and Us on our backlog. This is certainly not up to the quality of Get Out, but it is fun, weird, and handcrafted in the same vein. (B-)

Severance - This was right at the top of my “return to it in 2023” list. Well it didn’t take long. The first two days of 2023 were a binge of what is now a contender for my favorite show of 2022. (A)

Die Hard - Old trailers do themselves zero favors with my children. I pitched this for a week straight before the kids sat down and enjoyed the hell out of this classic. (A)

Citizen Sleeper - This might be the second best game I played in 2022. Excellent writing, storytelling, and world building. All wrapped up in a set of game mechanics that evoke my favorite parts of a tabletop RPGs. Also it is “free” on Game Pass if you have it. (A)

Glass Onion - I loved Knives Out, but some how watched it without my wife. I swear she fell asleep for it and she swears I watched it without her. In any case we watched and enjoyed this together with her having not seen the original. It is over the top compared to Knives, but still good fun. I love the idea of Rian Johnson and Daniel Craig doing 10 more of these Agatha Christie style (his words, not mine). (B)

Knives Out - Of course we had to watch this the next day. We probably should have started with it. It holds up and is still great. (A)

The Initiative - We don’t play board games in our house really. We like the idea, but we also keep a very busy sports and activity schedule. Forced family fun time (FFFT) is not something we enact generally because everyone doing their own thing is important too. However the holidays are an FFFT free for all (FFFTFFA) and we spent a lot of that time playing this fun coop codebreaking legacy game. (A)

High On Life - If I wasn’t all in on Game Pass this would be a highly skippable game. The association with one of the Rick and Morty creators was enough to peak my interest though. It is an OK shooter, with OK jokes, that overstays it’s welcome. (C-)

Spirited - The Ryan Reynolds schtick teeters on a knife’s edge of endearing or annoying. This squarely falls into endearing holiday musical. (B-)

Dying Light 2 - One can only play so many open world games a year. I thought this one would just pass me by, but a Steam sale caught last week and I had nothing, but time. The story and writing are B movie quality, but the parkour very good and the combat is not bad either. I don’t see myself finishing it, but overall enjoyable. (C+)

Moving Out - New Years Eve was just my wife and youngest home celebrating together. We asked him what he wanted to do and he said a video game we could all play. So we found this game on super sale on PSN. It was an OK to Good couch coop. It is no Overcooked, but still a laugh. (C+)

2022 Rap Round Up

Sure this could be a music rap up, but lets be realistic here. This didn’t feel like a stand out year for rap, but unlike games I don’t know if that is on the year or me. My second half of the 2022 saw a fall off from exploring new music, just busy I guess. Lots of anticipation for new work from artist I already know and some new stuff too. The real “write up” here is pretty much my annual Spotify playlist, but I’ve handpicked a few tracks/albums below that, enjoy!

JID - The Forever Story - I can’t pick between this and Vince Staples’s album for my favorite of the year. Both were great for different reasons. Forever Story is the companion piece to The Never Story from 2017 and demonstrates how far JID has come as an artist. The production is hand in glove with the rapping and writing, while the album explores a lot more of his personal life. Turns out all the features he has been on lyrically murdering his host for the past 5 years added up to something special.

Vince Staples - Ramona Park Broke My Heart - Recency bias here, but when Vince showed up on an episode of Abbott Elementary it felt like the culmination of a banner year for him. I paused the show and announced my excitement to my wife. Jump back to April when this album dropped less then a year from him self-titled 2021 album and I expected a lot, but not this. This year’s album was thoughtful in it’s pacing, mixing chest rattling bangers with introspective mellow tracks with ease.

Freddie Gibbs - Ice Cream - It could be telling that my favorite Freddie Gibbs thing this year was a single that was not on his very good $oul $old $eparately, but it isn’t. I like nearly everything this man drops. It feels effortless, his voice is a killer instrument, and like JID he outshines everyone he features for. Psst…over here…Bust Down might actually be the best thing he did this year. R.I.P. Jak Knight.

Tobe Nwigwe - Lord Forgive Me - The sheer number of new songs and weekly released music videos from Tobe this year was overwhelming. This song stood out, but I loved regularly checking and consuming his work via video, which is not my default approach to music.

Kendrick Lamar - N95 - This is not my favorite, second, third, or maybe even fourth favorite Kendrick album. But it says a lot that this is still an incredible album. Probably more about how profound and sustainable his work has been for more than 10 years now.

Westside Boogie & Shelley fka DRAM - Aight - Still can’t believe I didn’t mention DRAM on this standout track when I talked about the new album on the podcast (ep. 188). Maybe there was just too much to love about Boogie’s second studio album, that I was just caught in the moment. Killer stuff hear and loads of tracks worth throwing on a playlist.

Pharrell Williams - Cash In Cash Out - I don’t even know if Pharrell drops albums anymore. GIRL was in 2014, but he still shows up everywhere, and this year he dropped one of the best tracks with killer features from 21 and Tyler. Their styles are chocolate and peanut butter to me, and blend oh so well here. Throw in the fact that this video is amazing too.

Black Star - So Be It - New Black Star in 2022? Count it as something I did not have anywhere on my radar. I went on a deep dive into the 1998 album after seeing this on SNL the day after air.

What is this? Other genres? Well you scrolled all the way down here, you deserve some a treat…

2022 Shows Round Up

I’ve always thought of myself as more of a video game person when it comes to spending my free time. But after looking at this immense list of shows, I don’t even know who I am anymore. Below are too many list of shows you could watch too if you wanted to rob yourself of precious video game time, every moment is a treasure, enjoy!

  2. Russian Doll (s2)

  3. Slow Horses

  4. Yellowjackets

  5. The Bear

Shows that run well over an hour, but there is only ever one episode, so I really don’t make time for them like I used to in my 20s, but I did watch some and here is the order I liked them in or didn’t frankly:

  11. Thor: Love and Thunder

2022 Gaming Round Up

This wasn’t a milestone year for gaming, but certainly there were loads of games worth playing. Below are all of the games I spent time with and mostly enjoyed. I’m straight stealing the letter grade in parenthesis from Kottke. Enjoy!

Elden Ring - This was my favorite game of 2022. I never quite got the fervor that surrounds the “souls” series or any of the other FromSoftware games frankly. Not until Elden Ring at least. I was scared of it at first. Of course their fanbase is excited for it, but I’ll go in and be lost, get my teeth kicked in, and uninstall a week later. Then the momentum and hype around it only ever built. Videos and stories of all the cool things going on in my timeline. I sprung for it and they were all right. Probably a top 5 game in the past 10 years for me, but I haven’t thought that far out. (A+)

Resident Evil 8 - A 2021 game that folks loved and I ignored. I’ve been burned by the franchise too many times post RE4 (2005). I didn’t want to believe in the RE7 (2017) hype and then The Besties named RE8 their game of the year. They were right on every front. (A)

V Rising - I need and love a good survive together game. I played V Rising with my kids, friends, and brother and we had a blast. Throw in vampire themes, diablo style gameplay, and interesting boss battles and this was a banger. (B+)

Grounded - Playing survive together games solo can be rewarding too, not nearly as one would hope, but you can do it well. I loved the Honey I Shrunk the Kids vibes, but this game was balanced for playing with friends and it showed. (C+)

Tunic - A little pinch of souls, a heavy dash of Zelda, and so much game guide nostalgia from the 90’s. The amount of mystery baked into this game is exciting and overwhelming in very good ways. If you want to get mega deep and really understand how far they went this spoiler thread from a dev who worked on the language & audio ciphers in the game is excellent. (A-)

Rogue Legacy 2 - Just talked about this on podcast (ep. 198). It is a great follow up to the platforming rogue-like from 2013. I waited to get my Steam Deck to play it, which was 100% worth it. (B)

Stray - Co-op played through this bite sized single player story with my 10 year old and we loved it. The puzzles, story, and world were excellent. I’d take 5 more hours of it, if the gameplay was slightly more compelling. (B)

TMNT: Shredder's Revenge - We bought a third PS5 controller so that my wife, 10 year old, and I could play this together. I could not play through this game on my own, but as a couch coop game it was aces. (B)

Horizon Forbidden West - When I was hiding from my destiny to play and love Elden Ring, I nestled up to the Horizon sequel for warmth. It was fine, but the story got too complicated, there were 10 million things to do, and not many of them all that fun. I gave up on exploring halfway through and powered to the end. (C-)

God of War Ragnarök - My expectations for this game could not have been higher. The original game (4th game) was easily on that imagined list of top 5 games mentioned above. This game continued the story, gameplay, and themes from its predecessor, but did so with a little too much cruft and some pacing issues. Still great, but not capital G. R. E. A. T. (B+)

OlliOlli World - A sequel that got a gigantic visual overhaul to make it evoke major Adventure Time energy. I adored the overworld and the continuation of the hyper precise controls. The true successor to Tony Hawk in my opinion. Play it on the Switch or Steam Deck. (B-)

Cult of the Lamb - Rogue-like + town manager turns out to be a fusion cooking style I can get behind. Balancing those two elements is challenging, but Cult did so almost all the way till the end. (B)

COD: Modern Warfare II - This feels like an abusive relationship at this point. I buy COD every year, I get frustrated with their inconsistent approach to these games, and then I play a ton of them with my friends. This years entry has been extra crashy, sports a sleek new confusing UI, and takes away features they had “figured out” in favor of change for changes sake. I’m still playing it 1-2 times a week (D)

Sifu - This game burned so bright when I clicked with it, but frustrated me to no end when my skill set and hand coordination were not ready to match it’s difficulty. The hallway fight is the perfect example of the inspiration it takes from Kung Fu films, if you don’t play Sifu at least give it a watch. (B+)

Weird West - Lots of the original Fallout in this game, or really any isometric RPG of that era, but Fallout was my one of those. Throw that into a grim fantasy wild west and liked this a lot. The changing characters per chapter was a cool concept, but it is also where I punched out. (C+)

Tinykin - An Xbox Game pass treat, among many this year. Never heard of this until it dropped, but a fun way to spend a rainy/lazy Saturday. Rinse and repeat on the Honey I Shrunk the Kids vibes here, but with an equally tiny and welcome total playtime. (B-)

Somerville - There is some shared DNA with Limbo and Inside, but it is not the same developer. It is short and worth playing, but some clunky gameplay gets in the way of the otherwise fun and expansive story this tells in under 4 hours. (C)

Vampire Survivors - This game is so simple on it’s face that I assumed the hype was just that. Jump to me on my 16th run and two hours in. It also feels built for mobile, which turns out was a surprise announcement last week. (C+)

Teardown - Technically this game came out in early access in 2020, but when it came out in 2022 “officially” I ran at it again. The idea and the presentation are probably better than the execution. The missions can take way too long (30+ minutes) and the return to already explored levels is too frequent. (C)

Nobody Saves the World - Almost forgot this one, but I played a load of it and was surprised how unique and creative it got with every new character you could play. This could have been all consuming start to finish if there was not a mid-late game grind that kicked in. (B)

Steam Deck - What a joy to pick up a new piece of gaming hardware that is so considered and well crafted. The power + user experience + price point mix is near perfect. I think the thing that is easily lost in the comparison to the Switch is how well refined the Steam Store is compared to the Nintendo’s eShop, let alone the power disparity, build quality, etc., etc. (A)

2022 Backlog (a.k.a. games I didn’t get to, but might in 2023):

  • Neon White

  • Citizen Sleeper

  • Case of the Golden Idol

  • Serial Cleaners

  • A Plague Tale: Requiem

  • Darktide
